Abstract Studies highlight the hypocotyl diameter (HD) as an effective indicator of plant architecture (PA). Here, we estimated the genetic gain based on HD to improve PA. Twenty populations of cycles zero (C0) and one (C1), both in the F4 generation, were evaluated for PA, grain yield (GY) and HD. Plants with thickest HD in C0 were intercrossed in a circulant diallel mating design. In cycle C1, an estimated genetic gain of 4.93% was achieved for PA and 4.95% for HD. The populations with the highest probability of breeding lines with a thicker HD belong to cycle C1, and this selection strategy did not alter the GY of the populations of this cycle. Thus, indirect selection based on HD is promising for breeding for common bean PA by recurrent mass selection.

RESUMOO objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar a consistência da predição, dos potenciais de populações de feijão quanto ao diâmetro do hipocótilo (DH) e à produtividade de grãos (PROD), em duas safras, pelas metodologias de Jinks & Pooni e das estimativas de m + a'e de d. Para isso, foram avaliadas 48 populações segregantes, nas safras de inverno de 2009 (gerações F2e F3, simultaneamente) e de seca de 2010 (gerações F3e F4, simultaneamente), além de 16 testemunhas. Pela metodologia de Jinks e Pooni, verificou-se que apenas quatro e duas populações foram coincidentes entre as 12 melhores nas duas safras, para DH e PROD, respectivamente. A correlação entre (inverno) x (seca) foi significativa e de magnitude razoável para os dois caracteres, enquanto, para (inverno) x (seca), foi inexpressiva, indicando maior influência dos efeitos ambientais nas estimativas de variância do que das médias. Constatou-se baixa correlação entre os pares m + a'(inverno) x m + a'(seca) e d(inverno) x d(seca) para ambos os caracteres, evidenciando que essas estimativas também sofrem grande efeito de ambientes. As populações mais promissoras, considerando-se o DH e a PROD, simultaneamente, foram IPR Uirapuru x L1, BRS Valente x VC6 e CNFC 9466 x VC6, pela metodologia de Jinks & Pooni e CNFC 9466 x L3, BRS Horizonte x VC6 e IPR Uirapuru x BRSMG Madrepérola, pelo método de m + a'e de d. Assim, essas metodologias são complementares na predição do potencial de populações segregantes de feijoeiro.

ABSTRACTThe objective of this study was to verify the consistency in predicting the potential of common bean populations regarding the hypocotyl diameter (HD) and grain yield (GY) in two planting seasons applying the methodology of Jinks and Pooni and the estimates m+a'and d. A total of 48 segregating populations were evaluated in the 2009 winter season (generations F2and F3, simultaneously) and the 2010 dry season (generations F3and F4, simultaneously), besides16 controls. Based on the Jinks and Pooni methodology, it was verified that only four and two populations coincided among the twelve best in the two crops, for HD and GY, respectively. The correlation between (winter season) x (dry season) was significant and of reasonable magnitude for the two characters, but inexpressive for (winter season) x (dry season), indicating greater influence of the environmental effects on the variance estimates than on the mean estimates. A low correlation between the pairs m+a'(winter season) x m+a'(dry season) and d(winter season) x d(dry season) was verified for both characters, showing that these estimates are also highly influenced by the environment. The most promising populations, considering HD and GY, simultaneously, were IPR Uirapuru x L1, BRS Valente x VC6, and CNFC 9466 x VC6, according to the Jinks and Pooni methodology; and CNFC 9466 x L3, BRS Horizonte x VC6, and IPR Uirapuru x BRSMG Madreperola, by the estimates m+a'and d. Thus, these methodologies are complementary in predicting the potential of common bean segregating populations.

O feijão comum (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) é uma importante fonte de cobre na nutrição humana. O objetivo deste trabalho foi investigar a existência de efeito materno para a concentração de cobre em sementes de feijão comum, estimar a herdabilidade e os ganhos na seleção em gerações precoces para o caráter concentração de cobre e avaliar o potencial para o melhoramento genético. Os cruzamentos controlados foram realizados entre as cultivares IAPAR 44 x IAPAR 31 e Diamante Negro x TPS Bonito. As gerações F1, F1 recíproco, F2 e F2 recíproco, bem como as populações de retrocruzamentos foram obtidas para cada combinação híbrida. A faixa de variação da concentração de cobre entre as progênies testadas foi de 1,07 a 7,75 mg kg-1 de matéria seca, e nenhum efeito materno significativo foi detectado. A herdabilidade em sentido restrito foi de intermediária (51,98%) a alta (61,99%). Um incremento de 46,78% foi obtido para a concentração de cobre nas sementes utilizando os quatro parentais testados nesse trabalho.

The common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is an important source of copper in human nutrition. The objective of this research was to investigate the possible maternal effects on copper concentrations in the seeds of the common bean, to estimate the heritability and the selection gains in early hybrid generations for the characteristic of copper concentration and to evaluate the potential for genetic improvement. The controlled crossings were performed among IAPAR 44 x IAPAR 31 and Diamante Negro x TPS Bonito cultivars. The reciprocal F1, and F2 generations, as well as the backcross populations, were produced by each hybrid combination. The range of variation in the copper concentration among the tested progenies was from 1.07 to 7.75 mg kg-1 dry matter, and no significant maternal effect was discovered. A narrow-sense heritability was of an intermediate (51.98%) to high (61.99%) value. A 46.78% increase in the copper concentration was obtained in the seeds using only the four parents tested in this study.

O feijão é uma importante fonte de minerais e de proteína para a nutrição humana. O objetivo desse trabalho foi investigar a existência de efeito materno na expressão do teor de fósforo em sementes de feijão, obter estimativas de herdabilidade em gerações precoces e avaliar o potencial do melhoramento para esta característica. Os cruzamentos dirigidos foram realizados entre as cultivares Pérola x Guapo Brilhante e TPS Nobre x Guapo Brilhante. As gerações F1, F1 recíproco, F2, F2 recíproco e retrocruzamentos foram obtidas para cada combinação híbrida. O teor de fósforo variou de 3,38 a 5,78 g kg-1 de matéria seca e nenhum efeito materno significativo foi observado. Herdabilidade em sentido restrito de intermediária (65,54 %) a baixa (21,37 %) foi observada. Um incremento de 19,17 % foi obtido para o teor de fósforo em sementes de feijão, usando os três genitores testados neste estudo.

The common bean is an important source of minerals and protein in human nutrition. The objective of this study was to investigate possible maternal effects on phosphorus contents in seeds of the common bean, to estimate the heritability in early hybrid generations for the phosphorus content character and to evaluate the potential for genetic improvement. The controlled crossings were performed among Pérola x Guapo Brilhante and TPS Nobre x Guapo Brilhante cultivars. Reciprocal F1, and F2 generations as well as backcross populations were produced by each hybrid combination. The range of variation in phosphorus content among tested progenies was from 3.38 to 5.78 g kg-1 dry matter, and no significant maternal effect was discovered. Narrow sense heritability was of an intermediate 65.54% to low 21.37 % value. An increase of 19.17 % was obtained for phosphorus content in the seeds using just the three parents tested in this study.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi investigar um possível efeito materno no teor de potássio em sementes de feijão-comum (Phaseolus vulgaris), além de estimar a herdabilidade e o ganho na seleção em gerações precoces quanto a esse caráter e avaliar a eficiência da seleção em aumentar a qualidade nutricional do feijão. Cruzamentos entre quatro cultivares do grupo gênico Mesoamericano produziram as gerações F1 e F2 recíprocas e os retrocruzamentos (RCP1 e RCP2). O teor de potássio das progênies foi medido por digestão nítrico‑perclórica e uso de fotometria de chama. O teor de potássio nas progênies testadas variou de 6,0 a 14,9 g kg-1 de matéria seca, e nenhum efeito materno significativo foi observado. A herdabilidade em sentido restrito variou de baixa (33,26%) à intermediária (43,05%). Foi observada dominância parcial quanto ao baixo teor de potássio nas sementes. Nenhum aumento no teor de potássio foi obtido por meio de seleção. O melhoramento para aumentar o teor de potássio em sementes de feijão-comum pode apresentar dificuldades, porque o efeito de ambiente influencia fortemente o caráter.

The objective of this work was to investigate possible maternal effects on potassium content of common bean seeds, as well as to estimate the heritability and selection gains in early hybrid generations for this character and to evaluate the efficiency of genetic selection to improve the nutritional quality of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris). Crosses with four cultivars from the Mesoamerican gene pool yielded the reciprocal F1 and F2 generations and the backcrossed populations (BCP1 and BCP2). The potassium content of the progenies was measured via nitric‑perchloric digestion and flame photometry. The potassium content in the tested progenies varied from 6.0 to 14.9 g kg-1 dry matter, and no significant maternal effect was observed. The narrow-sense heritability ranged from low (33.26%) to intermediate (43.05%). Partial dominance was observed for low potassium content in the seeds. No increase in potassium content was obtained through selection. Breeding common bean plants for increasing potassium content in seeds may be difficult because the local environment strongly influences the character.

Com o objetivo de avaliar a associação linear entre a nota geral de adaptação e a produtividade de grãos de feijão como critério para a seleção indireta, foram conduzidos nove experimentos durante os anos de 2000/2001 a 2004/2005, em duas épocas de cultivo, no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil (latitude 29°42'S, longitude 53°49'W e 95m de altitude). A nota geral de adaptação, avaliada por uma escala de notas (1: excelente a 9: péssimo), e a produtividade de grãos foram determinadas em 14 cultivares de feijão. Correlação linear negativa foi verificada entre a nota geral de adaptação e a produtividade de grãos (r=-0,6134). A seleção indireta, por meio da nota geral de adaptação, é eficiente para o incremento da produtividade de grãos de feijão em linhas endogâmicas.

The objective of this research was to investigate the correlation between general adaptation note and grain yield as indirect selection strategy. Nine experiments were conducted in the agricultural years of 2000/2001 and 2004/2005, in two growing seasons, at Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil (latitude 29°42'S, longitude 53°49'W and altitude 95m). The general adaptation note was evaluated for the grade scale, where 1 was = excellent and 9 was = very bad, and grain yield was determinate in 14 common bean cultivars. Negative linear correlation was obtained between the general adaptation note and grain yield (r=-0.6134). The indirect selection for the general adaptation note is efficient for increment grain yield in common bean in inbred lines.

Os objetivos deste trabalho foram avaliar a composição de aminoácidos em gerações precoces de feijão, obtidas a partir de cruzamentos controlados com genitor de alto teor de cisteína, e identificar plantas com alto teor de cisteína nos grãos. A partir do cruzamento entre 'TPS Nobre' x 'Minuano', foram obtidas as gerações F1, F1 recíproco, F2, F2 recíproco, retrocruzamento 1 e retrocruzamento 2. Os aminoácidos foram determinados por cromatografia líquida de alta performance (HPLC) e os dados obtidos foram submetidos à análise de variância e de variáveis canônicas. Os aminoácidos - cisteína, prolina, tirosina, arginina, isoleucina e histidina - apresentaram variabilidade genética entre os genitores e as gerações obtidas. Os teores de aminoácidos essenciais e não-essenciais observados nos genitores e nas gerações F1 e F1 recíproco foram adequados para uso na alimentação. As demais gerações apresentaram deficiência em aminoácidos sulfurados. As duas primeiras variáveis canônicas explicaram 96,43% da variação total dos genótipos e dois grupos foram formados. Nenhuma planta da geração F2 é passível de seleção pelo programa de melhoramento para o desenvolvimento de populações segregantes de feijão com alto teor de cisteína nos grãos.

The objective of this research was to determine the amino acid composition of early generations in common bean developed from controlled crossings with high cysteine content parental and to identify plants with high cysteine content. 'TPS Nobre' x 'Minuano' were crossed and the F1, F1 reciprocal, F2, F2 reciprocal, backcross 1 e backcross 2 generations were obtained. The amino acid contents were determinated by liquid chromatography of high performance (HPLC) and the data were submitted to analysis of variance and cannonical variables. The cysteine, proline, tyrosine, arginine, isoleucine and histidine contents showed genetic variability between the parents and the generations. The essential and nonessential amino acids contents obtained from the parents, F1 and F1 reciprocal generations were appropriate to be consumed. Other generations showed deficiency of the sulfur amino acids. The two first cannonical variables explained 96.43% of the total variation of the genotypes and two groups were formed. None of the plants of the F2 generation is able to be selected by program of improvement to the development of segregating populations of common bean with high cysteine content.

A avaliação da claridade do tegumento dos grãos de feijão (valor de "L") é uma medida recente e ainda pouco utilizada no melhoramento. Por isso, o objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar se é possível classificar genótipos de feijão pelo valor de "L", dentro de mesmo grupo comercial, e avaliar o número de repetições necessárias. Dezenove ensaios foram conduzidos em Santa Maria, RS, durante os anos de 1998/1999 a 2005/2006, com número variável de genótipos. A coloração do tegumento dos grãos foi quantificada com colorímetro em grãos com 13% de umidade, imediatamente após a colheita. Considerando que a claridade dos grãos é associada ao valor comercial da cultivar, apenas os valores de "L" foram submetidos às análises. Valores entre 0,50 e 3,33 para o valor de "L" foram significativamente diferentes pelo teste de Tukey. A claridade do tegumento dos grãos pode ser utilizada para classificar lotes de feijão de um mesmo grupo comercial. Duas repetições são suficientes para a avaliação da coloração do tegumento dos grãos em feijão, com 90% de exatidão no prognóstico de seu valor real, e com alta precisão experimental.

The estimation of the common bean grain clarity ('L' value) is a new measure and it is not much used in the breeding programs. The objective of this research was to determine the possibility to classifying common bean genotypes for the 'L' value, within the same commercial group and to evaluate how many repetitions are necessary. Nineteen experiments were conducted in Santa Maria, in Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, from 1998/1999 to 2005/2006 years. The grain tegument colors were determined with 13% moisture. The clarity of grain tegument is associated with the commercial value of common bean cultivar. Values between 0.50 and 3.33 were significative different by Tukey test. The clarity of grains tegument ('L' value) can be used to classify common bean lots of same commercial group. Two repetitions are sufficient to evaluate common bean grains tegument colors, with 90% accuracy of the real value and high experimental precision.
